What You Missed in Crypto Last Week – October 16–23, 2026

The week of October 16–23, 2026 brought major developments across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, stablecoins, regulation, banking, and institutional Crypto infrastructure. Bitcoin remained around the low-$80,000 range despite significant institutional buying through U.S. spot ETFs.

Meanwhile, JPMorgan expanded tokenized bank deposits onto Ethereum, Solana activated one of the biggest upgrades in its history, U.S. regulators finalized important stablecoin rules, and Standard Chartered moved to take full ownership of a major Crypto custodian.

Bitcoin Holds Near $82K Despite Huge BlackRock ETF Inflows

Bitcoin spent much of the week around the $81,000–$84,000 range, struggling to establish another major upward move. However, activity inside the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market told a different story.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, or IBIT, recorded approximately $665.16 million in net inflows in a single day, its largest daily inflow since October 2025. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively attracted more than $500 million that day despite outflows from some competing funds. Check out BlackRock's $665M IBIT inflow report.

Several things make the divergence interesting:

  • Institutional Bitcoin demand remained strong
  • Large ETF purchases did not immediately push BTC significantly higher
  • Macroeconomic pressure continued to limit risk appetite
  • ETF flows are becoming increasingly important to Bitcoin liquidity
  • Institutional accumulation can continue even during relatively weak price performance

Instead of a dramatic rally, the week showed that significant institutional demand can sometimes be absorbed by broader selling pressure.

JPMorgan Brings JPM Coin to Ethereum Mainnet

One of the biggest institutional Blockchain developments came from JPMorgan, which brought its JPM Coin deposit token, JPMD, to the Ethereum mainnet.

According to J.P. Morgan's official announcement, JPMD represents U.S. dollar deposits at JPMorgan and is available to eligible institutional clients. Ethereum becomes the second public Blockchain supported by the product, with JPMorgan specifically pointing to Ethereum's deep on-chain liquidity and tokenized-asset ecosystem.

JPM Coin can potentially support:

  • Institutional payments
  • Settlement of tokenized securities
  • Collateral transfers
  • On-chain transfers between institutions
  • 24/7 movement of tokenized commercial-bank money

The development is significant because it places regulated bank deposits directly onto one of the world's largest public Blockchain networks. Instead of Blockchain operating separately from banking infrastructure, the two systems are increasingly beginning to interact directly.

Solana Activates Alpenglow and Cuts Finality to Around 150 Milliseconds

Solana introduced one of the most important technical changes in its history on October 21 by activating Alpenglow, its new consensus protocol.

Alpenglow replaced TowerBFT, the consensus system Solana had used since the network launched in 2020. According to the Solana Foundation's Alpenglow documentation, the upgrade reduces target transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds, representing roughly a 99% improvement.

Why does this matter?

  • Payments can become effectively irreversible almost instantly
  • Exchange deposits could be confirmed faster
  • Trading applications benefit from quicker settlement
  • Merchants receive payment certainty sooner
  • Solana has changed a fundamental part of its Blockchain architecture

This is much more than a normal performance update. Consensus determines how validators agree on transaction history, making Alpenglow one of the largest core-protocol changes Solana has implemented.

U.S. Finalizes First GENIUS Act Stablecoin Rules

Stablecoin regulation also reached an important milestone during the week.

On October 21, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency issued its final rule implementing major parts of the GENIUS Act, creating concrete federal requirements for payment stablecoin issuers under its jurisdiction. Read the OCC's final GENIUS Act rule.

The framework covers areas including:

  • Reserve assets
  • Stablecoin redemptions
  • Risk management
  • Audits and reporting
  • Custody
  • Capital and operational safeguards
  • Supervision of qualifying foreign issuers

The rules take effect on January 18, 2027.

For the Crypto industry, clearer rules could make it easier for banks, payment companies, and other regulated institutions to participate in stablecoin markets without operating under the same level of regulatory uncertainty that characterized previous years.

Standard Chartered Moves to Fully Acquire Zodia Custody

Traditional banks continued expanding deeper into Crypto infrastructure as Standard Chartered signed definitive agreements to acquire 100% of Zodia Custody.

Subject to regulatory approval, Standard Chartered will acquire Zodia's regulated custody businesses across markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, the UAE, and Luxembourg. The custody operations will then be integrated into the bank's Securities Services business.

The acquisition is important because Standard Chartered is not simply partnering with a Crypto custody provider. It is bringing regulated digital-asset custody directly inside the bank.

That could strengthen its capabilities across:

  • Crypto Asset custody
  • stablecoins
  • tokenized securities
  • institutional digital assets
  • cross-border digital-asset services

Interestingly, this is the reverse of the trend we saw last week with Kraken's parent moving to acquire a bank. Crypto companies are entering banking, while traditional banks are simultaneously absorbing Crypto infrastructure.

Stablecoins Are Now Moving More Than $400 Million Every Hour

New research also provided a clearer picture of how large the stablecoin economy has become.

A study from Coinbase and The Block Research found that organic stablecoin transfers averaged more than $400 million per hour during Q3 2026. Around 73% of screened stablecoin transfer volume occurred outside U.S. banking hours during the measured 12-month period.

Adjusted stablecoin transaction volume reached approximately $891 billion in Q3, roughly four times its level at the beginning of 2023.

This highlights one of stablecoins' clearest advantages: they do not close.

Businesses can move capital internationally, settle transactions, and automate payments regardless of weekends or traditional banking hours. Stablecoins are therefore increasingly evolving from trading instruments into always-on global payment infrastructure.

China Moves to Seize 61,800 BTC Linked to $5.7 Billion Fraud Case

Governments also remain important participants in the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Chinese prosecutors moved to confiscate more than 61,800 BTC connected to a fraud scheme valued at approximately $5.7 billion. The move followed a U.K. court ruling concerning claims over the Bitcoin and the application of Chinese law to victims' ownership claims.

The sheer scale makes the case notable. Government control of tens of thousands of Bitcoin raises important questions around custody, ownership, legal jurisdiction, and what eventually happens to confiscated assets.

Large government-controlled BTC balances can also become relevant to the market if authorities eventually decide to liquidate them.

What Does This Week Mean for the Crypto Industry?

The developments of October 16–23 point toward a Crypto ecosystem that is becoming faster, more regulated, and more deeply integrated with traditional finance.

Several broader trends stand out:

  • Public Blockchains are becoming financial infrastructure as JPMorgan moves tokenized bank deposits onto Ethereum.
  • Blockchain performance continues improving, with Solana dramatically reducing settlement finality through Alpenglow.
  • Banks are moving deeper into Crypto, demonstrated by Standard Chartered's Zodia Custody acquisition.
  • Stablecoins are becoming regulated payment infrastructure, supported by both increasing transaction volume and clearer U.S. rules.
  • Institutional Bitcoin demand remains resilient, even when BTC prices themselves struggle to move substantially higher.

The boundaries between traditional banking, public Blockchains, stablecoins, and Crypto-native companies are becoming increasingly difficult to separate.

Summary

The week of October 16–23, 2026 showed that some of Crypto's most important developments are now happening beneath the price charts.

Bitcoin remained around the low-$80,000 range despite major BlackRock ETF inflows, JPMorgan brought tokenized bank deposits to Ethereum, Solana activated its Alpenglow consensus upgrade, and the United States finalized major stablecoin regulations. Standard Chartered also moved to acquire Zodia Custody, while stablecoins continued demonstrating their growing role as 24/7 global payment infrastructure.

Together, these developments suggest that Crypto's next phase is increasingly about infrastructure rather than speculation: faster networks, tokenized bank money, regulated stablecoins, institutional custody, and public Blockchains becoming part of the global financial system.
